The Elaphite Islands or the Deer Islands consist of thirteen larger and smaller islands: Daksa, Koločep, Sveti Andrija, Lopud, Ruda, Šipan, Misjak, Jakljan, Kosmeč, Golec, Crkvine, Tajan and Olipa and many other reefs and islets. They owe their name - "Insulae Elaphite" or Deer Islands - to an ancient legend. Beacause of its number of sun days per year, the islands got the name “The sunny islands”. Only three of these beautiful pearls in the dark blue and clear sea are inhabited: Koločep, Lopud and Šipan.
The coast and the underwater world are a true delight for those who want to scuba dive or simply search the seabed with a fitted mask. The coast has many gorges, sandy beaches, coves, caves, grottoes, etc... Very often one can see dolphins that sometimes come as close as a few dozen meters from the shore. The bottom is sometimes sandy, but mostly rocky, rich in flora and fauna with seaweed, green, red and grey, fish, shellfish, crabs, corals and sponges. The passionate scuba divers can make unforgettable dives here; cliffs full of sea fans, gorgonia and other corals, shipwrecks from different eras, pitchers and other wonders make the underwater world interesting.
